AirData's 10-Minute Rewind: The Data-Management Case for Remote Drone Operations

Rewind helps late-arriving reviewers recover context. Storage and retention still need deliberate budgeting, and lost transmissions cannot be recreated.

What the update adds

AirData has announced live-stream recording, a rewind window of up to ten minutes and the ability to include preceding footage when a recording is started. AirData places these features in remote inspection and Drone as First Responder workflows, where the person reviewing video may not join at the start of a flight.

The report identifies support for incoming RTMP, RTSP and SRT streams, configurable retention and controlled sharing. A cloud copy can preserve video already transmitted even when aircraft storage becomes unavailable. It cannot recover footage that was never captured or successfully transmitted.[S1] [S2] [S3]

Scenario

UXV Searcher scenario: size a ten-minute video window

Assume an encoded video stream averaging 4-8 megabits per second. Ten minutes contain 600 seconds, giving 4-8 multiplied by 600, divided by eight: approximately 300-600 megabytes per stream. One hundred independently retained ten-minute recordings would therefore represent about 30-60 gigabytes before overhead or additional copies.

These are analyst-selected bitrate scenarios, not published AirData settings, measured compression ratios or vendor storage prices. Actual usage changes with bitrate, recording length, retention, redundancy and stream behavior. The calculation also does not assume that the rewind buffer is billed as permanent storage.[S2]

UXV Searcher analysis

UXV Searcher insight: useful context has a retention cost

The value proposition is less about a new aircraft capability than about making information available to another person at the right time. A reviewer arriving late can inspect earlier context without asking for a verbal reconstruction. That may improve workflow, but the announcement does not quantify time saved or errors avoided.

Procurement teams should separate live access, persistent recording and exported evidence. Each creates different questions about access, retention, administration and cost. A clear policy for who can start recording, who can view it and when it is deleted is more useful than assuming every stream should be kept indefinitely.

For mixed fleets, stream compatibility is a practical starting point, not proof that every camera, encoder and operating environment has been tested. Ask which configurations are supported and how incomplete or interrupted streams are represented. Those checks connect a software feature to a dependable operational process without claiming that the feature alone establishes regulatory compliance.

Limitations

What remains unknown

The product announcement does not disclose subscription pricing for every configuration, storage charges, service-level guarantees or independently measured operational savings. Accordingly, no return-on-investment percentage is assigned. Regulatory proposals mentioned in the source are not treated here as finalized requirements or as certification of the product. The recommended analytical focus is recorded-video availability, actual retention needs and total workflow cost.
